November Update

Journal Entry: Sat Nov 14, 2015, 4:54 PM
Hi everybody,

I've been working on a couple of pics over the last month. These are again for the Epic UK Tournament. I'm pretty chuffed with what I've done and should be posting them up next weekend. :)

I've also recently upgraded to a new iMac. My Mac Mini has lasted a good seven years and it was time to upgrade. I am liking my new machine, but there are a couple of sticking points chiefly being that my old Wacom tablet is not supported plus the fact I'm purchasing new software as my old software is not compatible with the newer machine. :(

Hey ho, that's progress I suppose!

Cheers,

Hi Guys & Gals,

Thank you all very much for 60,000 views on my front page! This equates to roughly 698,223 views on all my pics. :wow:

It's great being part of such a supportive and friendly community.

Heads Up

Journal Entry: Tue Oct 7, 2014, 2:24 PM
Hi Guys,

It's been a tough year following on from the loss of my mum in November. The toughest in fact.

Since then I've not managed to do any artwork. I've not had the inspiration, the energy, the 'mojo' as it were.

There is some good news however! I've been working on a couple of commissions over the past couple of months, so hopefully I'll be able to post them up soon.

Just a little heads up.

Sorrow and Mojo

Journal Entry: Sat Jan 18, 2014, 2:49 PM
Hi Guys,

I've not really been too communicative of late; My mum passed away back in November following her battle with cancer. To say my world was shattered is an understatement. I am ok. Better than I thought I would be. I think I have been helped with the pain mainly through the love of my wonderful wife and two lovely boys.

The two pictures I painted recently, Wh40K: Titan Legion on the March and Wh40K: Eldar Avatar were both painted whilst my mother was spending her final days in a hospice. The painting helped me through what was one of the most difficult periods of my life. I have projects to work on, many ideas to scribble down but at the moment I'm feeling kinda empty on the creative side. My artworking mojo is still deep down within me. Inspiration is still flourishing it's just I don't have the spark - the energy to create for the time being.

See you on the other side, when I've found a way through this morass.

Stug.

The Chaos Engine - very chuffed

Journal Entry: Wed Sep 11, 2013, 3:43 AM
Hi Guys,

I've had some positive feedback on my latest pic The Chaos Engine, not only from DA users, but also the various forums I frequent.
The Chaos Engine by StugMeister
Not only that, the lead artist who originally did the majority of the artwork for the game itself - Dan Malone - commented on Facebook! He said "Wicked! you've got me inspired - I really must do one or two revisits myself.." :D

So that's some good news. I've also started two new pics which I'll be able to post up come November.

Cheers,
Stug :ahoy:

Hi guys,

Here's a little sneak peek at what I'm working on at the moment. It's a piece I've been wanting to do for a while now...

Hopefully you'll be able to see the fruits of my labour within then next couple of weeks. :)

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 21, 2013, 1:25 PM
Hi everybody,

Thank you all very much for the page views! I can't believe I'm up to 50,000 already. :wow:

Worry not - I am still painting! My job (real-life) is taking a lot of my time and energy at the moment, which does limit my artwork in the evenings - a 4.30am wake-up will do that.

Thanks again for all your supports dudes and dudettes. I can't thank each of you individually for all the favs and comments but they are appreciated!

Cheers,

Some time to draw?

Journal Entry: Sat Jan 19, 2013, 2:14 PM
Hi Guys,

I'm off to Kiel in Germany tomorrow to spend a week at the Kodak training centre, doing some training for work.

Now, why is this worthy of a journal entry I hear you cry? Well, at the start of the year, I decided I wanted to create something. I'm not going to spill any beans at the mo, I'll see how I go; but suffice to say, I'm going to use my week away from my lovely family to get some artwork done. I'm taking a sketch pad and some pencils and I'm gonna do me some sketching!!

I might let you see what I create, then again, it might just be a tad rubbish, so we shall see.

Cheers,
Stug :ahoy:

Busy. SO very busy.

Journal Entry: Thu Nov 8, 2012, 3:07 PM
Hi guys and gals,

I've been wanting to write a journal update for a while now - but wanted to avoid the whole 'I'm still alive' routine that I seem to be following. I apologise for my lack of updates but real-life has really been very busy for me especially since June. The company I work for, a digital printers, was taken over by it's sister company. We are so busy now with so many new clients! I seem to be doing ten hour shifts most weeks.

But fear not, I have been working on stuff! There are some pics that I really want to upload but don't yet have permission from the company who I painted them for. Basically they're a big games company and I can't show them 'til their gamey-thingy is published. With any luck I'll be able to do it this side of christmas! I've also been working on many other commissions - two pics which I can upload in the later half of this month.

Cheers to you all,
Stug :ahoy:

Journal Entry: Wed May 23, 2012, 2:43 PM
Hi guys,

Just to let you all know that I still exist. If you read my last journal, you'll know that my wife and I had our second child in February so things have been busy! It's amazing how life-changing having kids is - every time. Not just the first one.

I have been working on a few things in the meantime, just not finished yet! I've also done a couple of pics for a big company that I'm so chuffed about. Hopefully I'll be able to post the work in my gallery.

Thanks for all your support. With any luck I'll be posting more work up in a couple of months!

Cheers to you all,

Expose 10...

Journal Entry: Sat Feb 11, 2012, 12:18 PM
Hi guys,

Well, we're still waiting for the baby to arrive! The due date is this Monday, so it's not late yet, but man-alive is it nerve wracking! Although it's our second child, the waiting and nail-biting is just as bad as the first - maybe worse!! :wow:

Anyway, I spotted that Ballistic Publishing are after submissions for their latest Exposé book: www.ballisticpublishing.com/bo…

Now I know some of my artwork isn't up to the level required for a book like Exposé, but I thought why not try? I've not got anything to lose right?

So, which pics in my gallery do you think I should submit??

Cheers to you all,

The Waiting Game...

Journal Entry: Wed Jan 25, 2012, 3:13 AM
Hi guys,

Thanks to all of you who looked at, commented or fav'ed my Necron Overlord Wh40K: Necron Overlord by StugMeister pic! It's likely to be a while 'til I can paint again so it's great to be given that kind of support. :D

As I mentioned in my last journal, there's a load of stuff going on with me at the mo (Wife's 30th birthday and baby due). With the baby due in about three weeks time I'm not sure when I'm going to be able to paint; especially as we've got our two-year-old son to keep us busy too! It really doesn't help that his favourite word at the mo is "No" either. :tantrum:

If you are interested in commissioning me to paint, please don't hesitate to send me a note - I know I probably won't be able to get started on anything right away, but I will be able to give prices etc. :)

So once again, thanks for all your support. With any luck I'll be posting more work up in a couple of months!

Cheers to you all,
Stug :ahoy:

A Big Thanks + Merry Xmas!!!

Journal Entry: Sat Dec 24, 2011, 12:09 PM
Hi guys and gals,

As all of you know I have recently reached 40K pageviews on my profile. This is an important number for me, not because of the amount of views - but because it ties in rather nicely with ALL the Warhammer 40K artwork I do. :D  So and big thanks and hugs to you all for all the support.

Also, whilst I'm updating my journal; a merry christmas and a happy new year to each and every one of you.

The new year is certainly going to be a busy one with my second child due in February which is also the same time as my wife's 30th birthday! I hope to be able to get as much artwork in as I have managed so far, but things could be tight for the first couple of months. Either way, I hope to improve on my skills and perhaps get a few more commissions.

Cheers,
Stug. :ahoy:

Monitor Troubles

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 4, 2011, 5:22 AM
Hi guys,

Stug's tip of the day when it comes to monitors and Mac Minis - go for the DVI option.

In my previous journal I said about how my old Samsung was going home. I purchased another Samsung unit; an E2220 21.5" widescreen display. At 1920 x 1080 it was pin-sharp but showed a nasty moire pattern across all midtones. This pattern was most visible in my greyscale artwork. :(

So, I spoke to the guys at Viper IT (www.viperit.co.uk), who I sourced it from and they suggested trying a different brand display which I did - a Benq G2220HD. This unit showed the same problem still! All other resolutions were fine just like the Samsung, but the moment you pumped it up to 1920 x 1080 (60hz) BANG! Moire pattern.

I went back to those lovely lot at Viper IT and they leant me a DVI cable to try - the Mac Mini only has DVI ports, but comes with a VGA adapter. It turns out the DVI cable solves all my problems! :)

Now I can get on with my current pic and get it ready for the big 40K page views!! :D

Thanks again for all your supports dudes and dudettes. I can't thank each of you individually for all the favs and comments but they are appreciated!

Monitors

Journal Entry: Sun Oct 30, 2011, 2:33 PM
Hi Guys,

My monitor is on its way out. The power button no longer works; well, it does when it wants to. Also, it has an annoying tendency to keep flashing its menu up on the screen every now and again - generally when I'm trying to paint something!! :(

So I'm looking at buying a new one, but one that's not too pricey. There's a 19" Viewsonic i've seen for just over £100 which looks like it'll fit the bill. It's not the cheapest monitor going, but then again I'm using it for my artwork so I shouldn't skimp too much.

Which monitor makes do you all recommend? :?

Thanks again for all your supports dudes and dudettes. I can't thank each of you individually for all the favs and comments but they are appreciated!

Almost there.

Journal Entry: Tue Oct 25, 2011, 1:14 AM
Hi guys,

Crickey! Every time I look at my profile, I see it getting closer and closer to that all-important figure of 40,000 pageviews!! :wow:

Now I was rather lazy with the 30,000 views. I toyed with the idea of doing a Horus Heresy themed pic to celebrate that benchmark. But then again I've never really been a fan of the HH era. I love the story and the groundwork it laid for 40K; I just prefer the present-day 40K.

So, looks like I'm going to have to get some gumption/energy and look into doing a big 'Thanks for the 40K views' pic....

Thanks again for all your supports dudes and dudettes. I can't thank each of you individually for all the favs and comments but they are appreciated!

Tanks

Journal Entry: Mon Oct 10, 2011, 3:08 AM
Hi guys,

I mentioned in my last journal about a very 'hush hush' project I've been working on called 'Project Hammer'; I can now reveal that this is in fact another fan-made Epic supplement that's in the works. At the moment it's title hasn't been decided on, but what it does include is lists for Squats, Ordo Xenos Inquisition and Tyranids. My latest pic, 'Betrayal', is one of many pics that I am doing for this book.

I've just finished a commissioned picture of a Tau Crisis suit in action, going to be working on a 'Nid picture next. Unfortunately I won't be able to show these off 'til November, but I am mightily chuffed with the Tau pic. :D Not too long to wait... ;)

Which leads us to the journal's title ; Tanks.

Well it doesn't really, but hey ho. I'm a big fan of military history and an even bigger fan of armoured vehicles. Recently I've been emailing companies about freelance illustration and have had not much in the way of replies - none in fact. :(  I thought this could be because of the quality of my work (which it could!), but then I realised that perhaps by portfolio doesn't actually include anything they'd be interested in? With this in mind I need to diversify more.

So first thing's first - tanks. I have a few vehicles in mind but I was wondering if anybody had any ideas of their own? What are your favourites?

Thanks again for all your supports dudes and dudettes. I can't thank each of you individually for all the favs and comments but they are appreciated!

An Announcement, SM Demo and Project Hammer

Journal Entry: Fri Aug 26, 2011, 4:42 AM
Hi guys,

I hope you're all fine and dandy? I thought I'd start this journal with some great news; my wife and I are expecting our second child! :) The baby is due in February, about a month after our son's second birthday. So lots to do!! I'm in the process of clearing out my study so that it can be used as the new baby's room. This means lots of bits and pieces going on eBay, to charity shops, the bin or recycling. Plus my Mac Mini must find a new home downstairs in the dining room.

I downloaded and played the Space Marine demo on my PS3 last night - man alive am I excited about this game now! At first I was a tad disappointed as every time I got stuck into the Orks with my chainsword I'd end up dead - however, after learning all the combat moves etc I finally understood the game in all it's Glory!!! :D

Artwork-wise I've still got a few little projects on the go, with another commission piece in the pipeline. Plus I also have a super-top-secret project which I shall name HAMMER. That's right; Project Hammer. I've got maybe a dozen pics to do for this project, but I won't be able to show them off for a while yet...

Thanks again for all your supports dudes and dudettes. I can't thank each of you individually for all the favs and comments but they are appreciated! :)

Cheers,
